20:20 Deon Mixon, Design Eye Game
We’re please to welcome Deon to the show. Andrew met Deon at GAMA.
What is Design Eye and where did it come from?
It started as a thesis idea in college (that didn’t get used). His goal is to increase diversity in the design industry. There are very few PoC in the industry now, according to statistics published by AIGA.
Deon hopes his game can make learning fun and introduce design concepts to youth. “Creating is fun!” and design is best done in a group setting, just like board games.
How did you get into design?
Deon started with music (classical violin), but decided that might not be a good career choice around 8th grade! A school counselor introduced him to graphic design as another way to use his creativity.
Tell us more about Design Eye, the game.
This game is for youth. The idea is that everyone is a student trying to build a portfolio and get into a prestigious school. Sketch, complete disciplines, critique, present your ideas …
There doesn’t have to be a lot of art IN the game to encourage kids to create!
One more game, Design Eye Pro, which will be teams competing to win clients.
Becoming a “design education company” where the game is one of many tools. Deon plans to continue reaching out to Detroit public schools and after school programs.
Deon’s dream is to get more schools to have a design curriculum and a way to introduce that to students across the country.
