SNAP Review – Hundred Acre Wood Fluxx

Elliot, did you know I share a birthday with A.A. Milne?

No?

He’s the author of the Winnie the Pooh books.

I didn’t know that, but I love the Winnie the Pooh books! Did you know that Tigger is one of my favorite stuffies?

I think I did know that…

Game

This is a SNAP review for Hundred Acre Wood Fluxx, a game for 1-6 players ages 8 and up.

Like other Fluxx games, it was designed by Andrew Looney and it’s published by Looney Labs.

And like other Fluxx games, it can vary wildly in how long it takes to play.

Art

So Elliot, let’s talk about the art in this game.

OK!

These cards are great. The characters all look pretty happy. And when I look at some of the goals, I remember those stories!

They remind me a lot of the old illustrations by E.H. Shepard, but they’re actually done by a guy named Eric Streed. I think they really capture the essence of classic Winnie the Pooh.

You do need to know, this is not the Disney version of Pooh bear and his friends.

Mechanics

Let’s talk about the mechanics. If you’ve ever played any of the Fluxx card games, you already know how to play this one.

But if you haven’t, here’s a quick run-down. Fluxx is a game where the rules change as you play. On your turn, you’ll be drawing at least one card and playing at least one card. There are four types of cards in this game: New Rules, Keepers, Goals, and Actions.

New Rules

New Rules are exactly what they sound like. When you play one of these cards, you change some aspect of how the game works. Maybe drawing more cards or maybe playing more cards. You might add a limit to how many cards you can have in your hand, or make additional kinds of actions available on a player’s turn.

New Rules stay in play until they’re either replaced by a competing New Rule or discarded by an Action card.

Actions

Action cards are one-time use: play them and immediately do what they say. These often involve discarding rules or shuffling around cards and Goals.

There are a few particular to the world of Winne the Pooh, like “Let’s Pretend”, “The Flood”, and “Expotition to the North Pole”.

Keepers & Goals

Keepers are characters or items that get played in front of you, from your hand.

Each Goal card sets a win condition for the game, and there is usually only one active Goal at a time. Every Goal card shows a combination of two or three Keepers; if any player has the Keepers to fulfill the active Goal, they immediately win the game.

All of the Keepers and Goals in this game are pulled directly from the stories of Winne the Pooh.

Hundred Acre Wood Fluxx setup with Meta Rule: Plush Players

Plush Players

Wait! You forgot the rule about stuffies!

You’re right. Specific to this version of Fluxx is the “Plush Players” rule. Stuffies can play the game, as long as they have a Primary Human Companion sitting next to them to handle the cards. They play cards from their hand at random.

And the rules say that if a Plush Player wins, no other player is allowed to take credit for that!

Expectations

So Elliot, what did you expect from Hundred Acre Wood Fluxx?

I expected a Fluxx game that was Winnie the Pooh themed. It looked a little weird, but it’s Winnie the Pooh-themed!

I don’t love Fluxx games, but I do love Winnie the Pooh. And finding out about the Plush Player rule made me interested in trying this one. I expected it would be another one of the family Fluxxes, without Creepers or too many ways to intentionally mess up the other players.

Surprises

So Elliot, is there anything that surprised you?

I mean, the fact that you can play with stuffies as players?! That was a really great surprise.

I was surprised at just how much this game pulled YOU in. It was really crafted with a love for Winnie the Pooh and it references all our favorite moments from these 100 year old stories.
